Dogs and Pools

Last night, just as a storm was starting, we picked up a cattle dog roaming the streets. As animal lovers we just couldn't leave him out in the storm. Bought him home and put him in the shed. We got through the storm without a peep from him. Then 11pm came - yap, whine, scratch, whine, yap.

We ended up bringing the dog in to the house and having him in our bedroom. Very little sleep - pacing, whine, yap, sleep a bit, pacing, whine, yap. A nightmare.

Emails were sent around locals to find the owner but nothing so we had to take him to vets who scanned his chip and hopefully contacted his owner.

Now to the pool. As the cover was on the dog kept falling in. Hub removed the cover so that he could see the water. This was very early in the morning and the colour was not seen until daylight.Nice eh?

Looks like we have a few days of dumping chlorine in to it and cleaning. Geeeez!

It's Snow Report

Reports filtering in that it is snowing at Bathurst and has been for a while, Bullaburra in the Blue Mountains and now Bilpin in the Hawkesbury.

Weird for Spring.

A Walk With The Dog

When you are rushing home from work in the car you just don't appreciate where you live. Just a stroll down our road with the dog really was appreciating. I am so glad I took the camera.

The first 2 pictures are both ends of our road.
You will see the gorgeous green fields to the side and the lovely lane leading to the Woods Reserve.

Another Sky Report

Absolutely awesome. After almost a day of rain we have a night sky of colour.
You can hardly see the mountains due to the low clouds.

New Visitor

Well he/she's beautiful, noisy and disruptive! These cockatoo are beautiful and close up I couldn't believe how big they are.
Problem is we cannot feed them and encourage them to visit, like we do the King Parrots, as they are so destructive with homes.

Another Baby Is Born

I get so excited when these little ones appear. Just speechless. I wish I could go and give them a big cuddle just like a baby puppy. These are two different babes with different Moms but look so alike. Both have a cute white diamond on their foreheads.Just waiting for this beautiful Mom to give birth. Her colour is just gorgeous, I wonder what the little one will be like.

The Foaling Season

This is the time for all the cute babies to be born. As I am surrounded by studs I enjoy this sight every year.
First the little babe was laying down and I couldn't get a good photo. So I decided to go for a walk up the road to check on the other bulging Mums and back. What a surprise. The lanky cutey was up and seemed to be a bit playful. Still staying close to Mum though.Aren't they just gorgeous.

Todays weather

I just love grabbing the camera when the sky is dark and mysterious. These clouds came over during lunch time and we thought we were in for a storm. Nothing, not even a drop of rain here in grose Wold, New South Wales, Australia.
You can see the dark clouds coming through the trees. Here it is and there it went. Not a drop of water to fill our tank.

It's Getting Cold In Australia

Well that is it with the pool. No more until at least, maybe, October.

Temperature has been down to zero on some days and cars are covered in frost.
It gave us a chance to try the chiminea out (how on earth do you spell that word!). Even 2 of the dogs joined it.

Sure Is Getting Hot Here

Well its hotting up here now and the aircon is on, dogs are panting and we can never sleep properly.
I had to add this clip as it must have been getting VERY hot just up the road from me.
And no, we did not have a clue that this was going on.

Basic Firefighter Assessment

As some of you know I joined the RFS (rural fire service) to be able to learn how to protect the area I live in and my home. On Sunday I completed my Basic Assessment which means I am now able to help provide assistance with fires like property protection, grass fires, bush fires, etc.

The training was vigorous with practical and theory but "little me" and Byron made it through with a lot of help from our trainers Lindsay and Karen Gorrie, not forgetting the assistance from fellow firefighters and our bald captain (that is another story which i will try and post another day).
The day itself was absolutely gorgeous but blooming hot in our PPE (personal protective equipment). Plenty of food and drink was supplied. Oh yeah we had yummy melting ice cream but don't you just love to stir it around until it is a blob, then eat it.
As you can see at the end of the day we were full of smiles, physically shattered but mentally charged.

You can check out my brigades website at http://grosewold.com/. The picture gallery is really interesting. Check out our Captains head and beard shave.

The Extended Family

Everyday the King parrots come to visit and peep for food. Usually it is one male and one female or a female on her own with a deformed leg. News must have carried fast as today my husband went out to feed them and found we had a family. At one time today we had 9 of them.

This sure looks like feeding time at the zoo!!!

What a 1st Of August 2008

It is well known here that August is the 'windy' month. Well we were not prepared for this 1st of August.

Friday started off very weird indeed. Went for a smoke about 6.30am to brave the chill but there was no chill, the wind was warm. Was we in for a storm? Until lunch time it remained gorgeous with sun and warm breeze. Then the shock came, the temperature dropped drastically and rain arrived.

In the evening we watched the news and weather, no warnings. Later in the evening I went outside and said to my hub that it was weird. There was a really strong wind but high so you couldn't feel it. But you sure could hear it through the bush trees. It would start as a gentle blowing sound then get so noisy, you could actually see the bush tree tops bending over.

By 9.30pm I decided to retire to bed but left our electric heater on in the room until hub came to bed. Even though my eyes were closed I noticed the fire go out and opened my eyes to be greeted with pitch black. On came the power again. Hub at the time was down the bottom of the garden with the dogs and was trying to work his way back to the house. Imagine not being able to see a thing and knowing he would have to negotiate back to the house going passed the pool and up the stairs.

By 10.00pm we were both in bed and the wind was now whipping around the house. The power had completely gone now and just to get up for the bathroom was a 'feel for furniture and walls' obstacle course. Neither of us slept much due to the wind and the noise of falling branches and roof tiles flapping. At one time we were wondering whether to get the dogs in and let them sleep in the bedroom just incase we had to make a quick escape. Those bush trees are massive. I also thought that we would wake to damaged cars as many of the sounds were large branches on tin, luckily it was the carport.

2.30am my son arrived home and said that he couldn't get home the normal way as the road was blocked. The other way was just about passable but he was swerving all over the road to avoid big branches.

Decided to get up at around 6.00am and the house was like a fridge. We had no running water due to being on tank water and the power still off. No form of heating as all we had was electric fires and reverse cycle air conditioners. We put the generator on and manged to pump some water through so that we could fill the saucepans, heat them up on the gas hob and have some sort of wash. Did this bring back memories, the last time I had a strip wash in a freezing cold room was when I was a child and my Nan used to say 'Don't forget the back of your neck, your smelly bits including your feet'. At 40+ trying to get your feet up into the sink was a job and a half.

This was the aftermath of the winds. Blocked road (luckily we had another route out) and power lines and poles down.

We deicded to go into the local town and have a big breakfast. Mmmmm. Then back to a cold house.

I telephoned the electricity company and was told we should be back on around 12.30pm. That came and went I telephoned again the response was late afternoon. At 3.30pm I decided to take a drive down the road and look at the carnage and realised that no one was about. Where were the workmen? Late afternoon power on - my big butt? We drove down again round about 8.00pm and they were working away. Yaaaayy. Big trucks and lots of lighting. I really hoped they could get it done as it wasn't just a fact of reconnecting the wires the pole was down.

We prepared for the cold. And the forecast said there may be frost. Great! Found my thermals, on they went with 2 sweatshirts, fleece, 2 pairs of socks, gloves and a scarf. Hub had set up the generator earlier to try and keep our freezer going as it was full of food so he thought if he could do that, then he could get the TV on. OK we watched TV in darkness and freezing cold huddled on the sofa with the dogs for extra warmth. We also made ourselves a bit headachey and sick due to the fumes coming in to the house from the generator. By 9.30pm we were in bed almost fully clothed.

We must have been really toasty warm as we both slept quite well. I woke around 3.00am for the bathroom and noticed the time on my bedside clock. Yayyyy we had power back. Did I appreciate the shower this morning. It was like Christmas.

A neighbour who has lived here many years said that it was the worst winds she had experienced. I honestly thought all through the night that this was it, we were going to lose everything. We are so lucky and if we hadn't had the generator things may have been a bit more unbearable.

My Clever Hubby

OK so I do moan alot about him and the rubbishy bike bits he leaves lying around. Now, I am a little bit, yep, just a little bit, proud of his work in progress. Just a few more bits and it will be complete so I can't praise him yet or it will never get completed!
This was all in pieces, rust in places and battered. He filled places, rubbed it down and had it resprayed. Bit sore on the bum at the moment with no seat!!!

Weird and Wonderful Sky

Thought I would show the local sky. It has been a funny few weeks. last week was very clear, quite warm during the day and got very chilly at night and first thing in the morning. Yesterday we had quite a few downpours but I had to get the camera out. The sky was so amazingly beautiful. Don't you agree?
This one is the view from the back of my house.

At the same time this is the front of my house.

This one was taken at lunch time on my way back to work. I just had to pull over and take a photo.
